Why Underwood Stakes is the event punters are waiting for?

The Underwood Stakes is a Group 1 race run under Weight For Age conditions as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The Underwood Stakes is the first weight-for-age race of the spring in Melbourne or Sydney that is longer than the mile distance.

The Underwood Stakes 2022 will be run on Sunday 25th September at Sandown Racecourse. The total prizemoney is $1,000,000.

History Of The Underwood Stakes

First, run in 1924, the Underwood Stakes was initially known as the Williamstown Stakes and run at a few courses including Williamstown. From 1948 it moved to Caulfield racecourse before being moved to its current home Sandown after some changes were made to the Spring Racing schedule by

Racing Victoria.

The race itself has been won by some of the champions of the turf. Recent winners include ZAAKI and RUSSIAN CAMELOT while ELVSTROEM, MUMMIFY and NORTHERLY all went on to win the Caulfield Cup after winning the Underwood. Other famous winners include SO YOU THINK, OCTAGONAL, AJAZ and PHAR LAP.

New Zealand-based trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman have enjoyed a lot of success in the race in recent years, making the trip across the ditch to win the race three times with BONNEVAL (2017), DUNDEEL (2013) and LION TAMER (2011). Any horse they bring to Melbourne for the carnival must be respected.

Why Bet On The Underwood Stakes?

Group 1 Weight For Age races is racing in their purest form. It is the best horse racing in the fairest conditions. From a betting perspective, this provides a great opportunity for bettors who are well researched and prepared. The best jockeys ride in the race and the horses have a lot of exposed form. Punters can bet with confidence that there will be few surprises in the race.

Placing A Bet On The Underwood Stakes

The Underwood Stakes has been a great race for punters in recent years with well-supported runners’ winning five of the last six races. These include odds on favourites ZAAKI ($1.18 in 2021) and RUSSIAN CAMELOT ($1.55 in 2020) in the last two years. BLACK HEART BART was a knockout result in 2019 when winning at odds of $101 but apart from that, bettors have been well on top.

Since the race stepped up in distance to 1800m the majority of winners were at least third up into their prep with a number of Underwood Stakes winners going on to win more races throughout the Spring. Only two Underwood Stakes winners have finished worse than fourth in their previous run since 1997 and mares have a poor record in the race, with BONNEVAL the only girl; to win in recent times.

Put simply, quality male middle-distance gallopers who have had at least two starts for the prep run well in the Underwood Stakes.
