The Underwood Stakes is a Group 1 race run under Weight For Age conditions as part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. The Underwood Stakes is the first weight-for-age race of the spring in Melbourne or Sydney that is longer than the mile distance.

History Of The Underwood Stakes
First, run in 1924, the Underwood Stakes was initially known as the Williamstown Stakes and run at a few courses including Williamstown. From 1948 it moved to Caulfield racecourse before being moved to its current home Sandown after some changes were made to the Spring Racing schedule by
Racing Victoria.
The race itself has been won by some of the champions of the turf. Recent winners include ZAAKI and RUSSIAN CAMELOT while ELVSTROEM, MUMMIFY and NORTHERLY all went on to win the Caulfield Cup after winning the Underwood. Other famous winners include SO YOU THINK, OCTAGONAL, AJAZ and PHAR LAP.
New Zealand-based trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman have enjoyed a lot of success in the race in recent years, making the trip across the ditch to win the race three times with BONNEVAL (2017), DUNDEEL (2013) and LION TAMER (2011). Any horse they bring to Melbourne for the carnival must be respected.
